Peas Pulao

There is no end to the amount of variation when it comes to rice recipes. There are tons of varieties out there. I guess that's a good thing, we won't get food boredom.

Let's prepare a rich smelling flavorsome pulao using green peas.

What do you need 3-4 servings

Used Measuring (1 Cup = 250ml)

  • 400 gm basmati rice

  • 2/3 cup frozen green peas

  • 4 onions

  • 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste

  • 300 ml thick coconut milk

  • 300 ml water

  • 7 green chilies

  • Mint - Handful

For Tempering

  • 1 tbsp ghee

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 3 bay leaves

  • 1 tbsp cumin

  • 6 cloves

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 1 star anise

  • 3 cardamom

  • Few cashews


  • Cut onions lengthwise.

  • Cut the chilies vertically.

  • Soak the rice with water (300 ml) for 20 mins.

  • Generally, rice to water ratio is 1:1.5, For 400 gm basmati rice I used 600 ml liquid which is 300 ml water & 300 ml coconut milk.

Let’s Cook

  • Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker, when it’s hot add all the ingredients under tempering list.

  • Add onions and saute it until translucent. [PIC 1 & 2]

  • Now add ginger garlic paste and green chilies. Mix well and cook until raw smell goes away. [PIC 3 & 4]

  • Add green peas, mint, and Cook for a few seconds. [PIC 5]

  • Add required salt. Pour coconut milk and soaked rice water. [PIC 6]

  • Bring it to boil and add basmati rice. [PIC 7]

  • Slowly mix everything and bring it to boil again.

  • Keep the flame low, cover the cooker and pressure cook for 1 whistle. [PIC 8]

  • Open the lid after pressure goes down and gently mix the rice with a rice paddle. [PIC 9]
